The combination of significant changes to the international trade landscape and the effects of consumer behavior brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic, has only expedited the growth in e-commerce and accelerated the demand for 3PL warehousing. Companies are adjusting strategies around e-Commerce fulfillment solutions and where the key locations are across their supply chain as indicated by Matt Leonard from Supply Chain Dive in the article “Southeast US warehousing markets to grow as supply chains opt for China+1 Strategies.”
As companies reevaluate their supply chains and turn to China+1 strategies — with sourcing in Europe and parts of Asia that can access the U.S. fastest through the Suez Canal — the American Southeast and Gulf Coast are expected to benefit from increased import volume, according to a new report from CBRE, “The Changing Flow of International Trade.”
As stated in the 2020 State of Logistics Report published by CSCMP & Penske, eCommerce sales grew almost 15% in 2019. This was before the acceleration of online shopping brought on by the need to remain socially distant in 2020. “The logistics of eCommerce differ greatly from the logistics of brick-and-mortar retail.” Retailers are needing to make quick adjustments in their supply chains in order to meet customers’ increased needs and expectations for faster delivery.
According to the Supply Chain Dive article, “The Southeast closed the first quarter of 2020 with the top three fastest-growing industrial real estate markets: Savannah, Georgia; Greenville, South Carolina; and Charleston, South Carolina.”
